The Roots of the U.S. Armed Forces

The very beginning of the U.S. Armed Forces is associated with the Continental Army that emerged in June 1775. It was formed by the Second Continental Congress as a means to face the British Army and defend the colonies.

George Washington became its first commander, and at the beginning, it was led by soldiers who had previously served in the colonial militias or the British Army. For this reason, much of the British military heritage was brought to these armed forces.

Then, this army was strongly influenced by the French aid, resources, and military tactics during the Revolutionary War. Many renowned soldiers came from Europe to support it, including Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who introduced the Prussian Army strategies and organizational principles.

In October 1775, the Continental Navy was also established, and in November of the same year - the Continental Marines emerged. They were formed in close succession by the Second Continental Congress so as to protect the new nation from the attacks of the British Empire in the American Revolutionary War.

The Division of the U.S. Armed Forces

The modern U.S. Armed Forces consist of six divisions:

• Army
• Air Force
• Navy
• Marine Corps
• Coast Guard
• Space Force

Their commander-in-chief is the president of the United States, and he takes care of the military policy together with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Defense (DoD). They are both federal executive departments, serving as the principal authorities by which military policy is carried out.
